According to a number of reports, tablets are set to become the driving force in ecommerce activity this year. Purchases made on tablets, such as the Apple iPad, are set to equal smartphone purchases in 2012, which are also rapidly increasing.
A recent study was carried out on shoppers making online purchases in the run up to Christmas 2011. 15% of respondents said they had used a mobile device to make a purchase pre-Christmas 2011, up from only 7% pre-Christmas 2010.
The survey also revealed that 26% of online shoppers said they will spend even more online in the run-up to Christmas 2012, prompting a forecast growth of between 18-22% in ecommerce sales between Christmas 2011 & 2012.
Looking at the statistics available for our clients, we have seen a high increase in the number of site visitors from tablet devices. One of our ecommerce clients has seen an increase in the number of transactions of 616% from Christmas 2010 to Christmas 2011 and an increase in revenue from tablet sales of 533%.
According to predictions, ownership of tablets will continue to flourish this year, with 5 million devices being sold to consumers who already own one.
Tablets are now growing even faster than the mobile commerce market and it is becoming increasingly evident that one of the primary uses of a tablet device is for an online shopping tool.
